Northbeam

Northbeam runs regional freight for hundreds of small carriers. Their dispatch dashboard had grown for six years without a designer touching it — powerful, but nearly unusable for new staff.

Challenge

Dispatchers needed 3–4 weeks of training before working independently, and every new feature made the interface heavier. Leadership wanted growth, but the product had become the bottleneck.

Approach

We shadowed dispatchers for two weeks, mapped every task they perform under pressure, and redesigned the dashboard around the three actions that make up 80% of their day. A new design system replaced 40+ inconsistent screens, and our engineers rebuilt the front-end in Next.js with the existing API untouched.

Outcome

Training time dropped from weeks to days, and the support queue shrank enough that Northbeam reassigned two full-time staff to onboarding new carriers instead.
